Does the printer appear under your available printers (under "System >
Administration > Printing") after you plug it in? A lot of printers just
work out of box w/o any messing. Now if it's not appearing, or you cant
print from it (but it does appear), then see below.

Generally, if you're curious if a printer will work with linux, the
first place you want to look is here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

You may not have known about that before...but now you do. It's a great
reference.

Now, for your specific printer, I found this page:
http://openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Canon-PIXMA_iP1300 
The printer apparently works perfectly, and recommends Cannon's official
linux driver. The page also includes links with instructions on how to
install the driver for various printing systems (you would want CUPS
with Ubuntu), as well as a download link for the driver itself.
