How to understand kernel 32 or 64 bit?

The Ubuntu-provided 64-bit kernels can execute 32-bit binaries. But if
the 32-bit binary needs shared libraries, those libs must be present (in
32-bit) as well. Therefore you may have to install something like the
ia32-libs package (or whatever provides the needed libs).
