Can you post a link to that tarball?

The reason is probably because "installiing tarballs" isn't always the 
same procedure. It may be a binary driver which can only work with one 
specific kernel or it may be some source code which needs to be compiled 
or maybe something else. Without more specific info it is impossible to 
help you with it.
