If you want the GUI method, I believe the way to do it is this:
* R-Click on Network Manager (on the panel) > Edit Connections
* Wired Tab > Select "Auto eth0" > [{/} Edit] button
* IPv4 Settings Tab (and/or IPv6 if you have) > Method: [ Manual ]
* Addresses > [+ Add] button > Type your desired IP address
* Click below the "Netmask" column, next to your new entry and
enter your subnet mask (i believe a reasonable default is
255.255.255.0)
* Click below the "Gateway" column, next to your new entry and
enter the address of your DHCP Server (usually your
modem/router's address)
* If you want the connection to be available to all users on the
system, check the "Available to all users" box at the bottom.
* Click [ Apply ]
* Ta-da
likewise, if you still want an automatic (DHCP) connection available, do
the same thing as above, but instead of editing the existing connection,
just make a new one and uncheck the (automatically connect) on the auto
connection. That way, you can use the auto if you want, but by default
it will use the static connection.
Hope that helps!
