Yes, it _can_ matter. Typically front slots on a desktop are wired
extensions from the main motherboard usb electronics, and tend to pick
more noise (electrical) as a result. Front slots also may lose full
voltage due to the wiring. If the voltage to the USB is just borderline
at the port, the USB device may encounter problems as well.
  The back slots are generally very short extensions and typically well
shielded from noise.

I find quite often that a user says that he/she is having usb issues. I
recommend they then try the back/other slots & all of a sudden the
device works :-) So if you are having difficulties booting from the
stick at the front slots, try the others.
