It does. Maintenance and application installation also takes a long  
time, which is why I switched to Arch. I never used Gentoo in order to  
have 1337 CFLAGS so the switch wasn't all that drastic, except for the  
faster speed.

It's not. You have to build the support in your kernel. Nothing is  
"auto-detected" except when using the install cd which is not the  
system that is actually installed on your computer.
