As a 30+ year user of emacs, I finally swapped editors to Eclipse. That
plus Pydev and Pydev Extensions make it more functional than emacs for
editing, with the one exception of keyboard macros, and I still swap
back to emacs for that one task.
As to vim, if you can think modally, go for it. I don't do modal.
