Theres also the shiny new 'Computer Janitor' tool which can do just that
with a simple visit to "System > Administration > Computer Janitor" :D
Personally, I like the re-purposing of the 14GB partition idea.
Particularly if you're just trying it out to see if you like ubuntu/want
to use it full time (I, as i'm sure many others here, would
recommend :)). this will give you plenty of leeway to install programs,
make documents, etc etc... though If you're really committing to a full
install for the long-haul, it may be a good investment to get another
hard drive to dedicate to ubuntu. Thats not an option for everybody, I
know, but just my 2 cents...
anyways, just to give you an idea on sizes on an existing install... my
computer has been a single, persistent install since Ubuntu 7.04
(upgraded now to 9.04), and I allocated 20GB to root, and the rest of
the hard drive (about 90GB) to my /home directory... and after all this
time, my root is sitting at 13.5GB (home is nearly full, and i've added
a 500GB HDD for other stuff). I find that I must clean it out every
now-and-again, otherwise I also run out of space, but i'm also running a
web server, plus I've got several hundred programs installed, and a ton
of source code...so 14GB would probably be plenty for the time
being...(if you can use that partition)
Hope thats helpful!
