Can't upgrade to Jaunty, half upgrade has hobbled computer. [SOLVED]

I ended up reformatting my root partition and installiong Jaunty fresh.

So while the cause of the original problem remains unknown, I have a 
nice clean, and fully functional, install of Jaunty.

And a whole lot of reconfiguration to do in order to get my environment 
back up. Oh well.
