How is cron job output delivered by default?

I think cron job output is usually mailed to the user, but understand
that Ubuntu doesn't come with an MTA by default,
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2005-February/004207.html

^ This message mentions "Change anacron, at, and cron to abuse the
interactive upgrade hooks
(http://www.ubuntu.com/wiki/InteractiveUpgradeHooks) to deliver output
to the user if sendmail isn't there or fails to execute"

- but the Ubuntu cron documentation doesn't say how output is delivered
by default, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CronHowto
