FWIW, locate works really well once the db has been updated (which, 
unless I'm mistaken, happens each night).  Updating manually is  a 
little timeconsuming, but to do it simply issue 'sudo updatedb', then 
locate <somefilename> or locate <somewildcard+filenamemask like *.pdf> 
really works fast as it searches the index, not the file system per se.
