Mixing and matching files from different distributions is an excellent
way to hose your system. Debian is not Ubuntu; the packages are not
compatible, although Ubuntu is debian-based.

If I were you, I'd do a complete reinstall. Jaunty is going to be
released soon anyway.

What you are after doing is not supportable, and I don't think it can
ever be supported.
