Vista comes with a tool to resize partitions. I suggest to use that tool 
because Microsoft should know best how to resize NTFS partitions 
without data loss. Then it should be no problem to install Ubuntu to 
the now free space on the disk.

What horror stories of grub problems are you talking about?
