Well its not really solved, but thanks everyone for their comments and
suggestions.   Decided to go for a HP OfficeJet 6500 wireless.  Install
went smoothly enough, although there wasn't a model specific driver.  (I
picked one close enough and it works fine...)  I've got a mail into HP
about it for a recommendation.

For what its worth there were a couple features about that I
liked/wanted beyond Linux support/ease -- double sided printing,
reasonable cost of ink.
