How to understand what different series of beeps means is difficult, as it
depends on the BIOS which is installed on your machine.

Normally when you bootup, the POST (power on self test (think that's right))
is run, and if there are no problems you get 1 beep, then the bootup
proceeds.

I don't remember getting any beeps on shutdown, but obviously, if you reboot,
rather than shutdown, you will get 1 beep again, as the POST is run again.

A while back one of my machines suddenly sent out a whole series of beeps,
then the machine shutdown instantly. It was a bit scary at the time, and I
discovered that the fan on the PSU had run out of oil in it's bearings, and
had stopped. This had caused overheating of components in the PSU, resulting
in the switch mode PSU losing control of the +5v, -5v, +12v, -12v output to
the mobo, and resulted in the series of beeps, and the sudden shutdown of the
machine. I re-oiled the bearings on the PSU fan, and the machine is running
at the moment, with the same PSU, and re-oiled fan.

If you are really interested in beep codes, try googling as below.

POST beep codes

I get about 531,000 hits on that.

Nigel.
