Hi, Is it a laptop? I had this problem once and it was due to the power manager in which I had selected an option "Dim screen when running on battery" or something like that. My laptop ACPI was not very well managed by Ubuntu and it was freezing trying to get the screen to dim. I hope it helps... Vincent
