going dim

I installed Intrepid recently.   From time to time, and increasingly so I
think, the application I am using goes dim, brightens, then may go dim
again, sometimes freezing.  The system becomes very sluggish, the processor
is at 100%.  If I reboot things usually get better for a while.  Sounds like
a video card issue.  I am using a Dell 600m.  I have about 5 gigs of space
left, which should be enough for swapping.  375 megs of memory.  I did not
have this problem in Hardy.

Any suggestions appreciated.
