Thank you all for you help, it's so easy when you know how. Using
Synaptic I found lxrandr,downloaded and installed it and ran in a
terminal window. Up popped a window with three possibilities, I chose
the one I wanted and the laptop monitor switched off and the external
monitor was set to the correct resolution. Ubuntu is certainly great.
