How to monitor Internet connection?

How are you connection to the internet from that server? If your
internet connection is based on a modem, you could check the up/down
state of pppx (where x is 0,1,2,etc.) on the server (or of any other
interface device, like eth0, eth1, etc.). In other words, it is possible
to trigger a script if an interface goes up or down. Search for ifupdown
package to know more about this.
