Shell not working properly in emacs on ubuntu

While I know almost nothing about emacs, does the extra junk disappear if
you use ls -f ?
If so, then either emacs can't interpret the colour information correctly,
or isn't set up to do so.  Perhaps someone else or an emacs-user list?
There must be at least a couple emacs users left  ;-)
