status area shows nothing

Do you mean the notification area? You can try adding back in (I'm
assuming that you are using Gnome desktop otherwise you'd be posting on
the kubuntu list if using KDE):
Right-click the panel and then 'Add to Panel' and then add Notification
Area'. No clue as to 'gnome-do or google-desktop'.
