After a kernel upgrade you _must_ reboot in any case, otherwise the new
kernel simply would not be loaded, moreover if is not a new release but
simply an upgrade of the old one, you _could_ (and indeed you apparently
do) experience failures in device handling, because of some
compatibility problem in drivers' modules.
