Doesn't require the use of sudo in my Intrepid multi boot system. Or any of several version installed.  You may want to ask what you may have done with your system to cause you to use sudo for it to work.  Have you changes permissions or edited /etc/group? Or, maybe, just add your user to the adm and admin group as I have done.  Not sure this is all correct by Ubuntu standards but no problems for me in doing so.
