lost part of desktop

These problems did not really bother me and I have some new hardware
coming, so I did nothing to fix them.

Both fixed themselves. All I did was routine upgrades. Menu bar came
back in couple of weeks. Screen returned to correct resolution after a
couple of months.

Weird.
