Brother is high on my list for their efforts with linux drivers (Lexmark
also). Brother has a
linux group in their Japan office.

Anyways, to answer your question, brscan is the scanner driver, the
scan-key tool is for scanning to
your pc from the scanner control panel. Forget about that, and just install
the correct scanner driver,
which is brscan2 for the MFC-240C as per this URL:

http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/download_scn.html

All the information is there, but you do have to know if you are running 32
or 64bit, and how your MFC-240C
is connected, USB or network.

There is also Brother print driver packaging in the Ubuntu multiverse
repositories. The MFC-240C is supported
for Printing drivers. Here is the URL for that Wiki:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BrotherDriverPackaging

This should do it for your Printer driver:

sudo apt-get install brother-cups-wrapper-bh7

Cheers!
