Perhaps it's an hplip issue, see:

[there are some added troubleshooting hints in that long bug]
Also, is this the model that also has an ethernet port? If so you might
try connecting that way - if that works then you can troubleshoot down
to an issue with hardy not working with the usb port (I know you said
the usb works fine with XP so it would be a hardy issue).
One other thing that you can try is to make sure that the usb is
connected to another connector on the rear of the machine. There have
been usb issues in the past whereby devices connected to the front usb
ports do not sync correctly due to noise and/or weak usb power. Check
your system logs (/var/log/) to see what usb msgs appear when you
disconnect and reconnect the printer's usb cable.
