He installed from "inside Windows" - it's a wubi install.

Francesco:  when the boot menu comes up, type "e" on the ubuntu line,
then "e" again on the "boot" line, remove "quiet splash", press <enter>
and "b", and it should boot in a much more verbose mode - which might help
explain what happened.
