Samba and XP machines

Ok, I'm at my wits end here. It seems that nothing I do to the samba.conf
works. I followed the How To at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=202605 and it did not work. I
can't even see the Ubuntu machine now.
Just about to abandon....
