This is one of the bugs in Intrepid being worked. A work around is to
append ",ifupdown" without the quotes to the plugins= line
in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf and restart your system. 

Another one is to remove Network Manager completely and then configure
networking in /etc/network/interfaces.
