Screen resolution loop [help!]

Thanks for all the replies. To re-iterate: Booting an 'up-to-date' 8.10A6 
proceeds one screen past the loading 'thermometer' GUI to a CLI that 
offers a log-in prompt below several system messages, but too briefly 
to read the info or to enter any info, i.e. to log-on.

The screen then goes black and the system appears fatally locked-up: 
none of the key sequences I've seen mentioned elsewhere  -- 
crtl-alt-F#/crtl-alt-sysreq -- have any obvious effect. I don't appear able
to enter anything at a terminal, because I can't log-in. 

Of course, I had been having the same result effectively with a previous
8.04(LTS) install attempt, which is why I was trying 8.10A6. Trying to modify
screen resolution seems flawed, at this point.
