No one has directly answered your question, though they've given you
some pointers.  I found a tutorial that specifically uses gmail
(http://www.linuxha.com/other/sendmail/gmail.html) as an SMTP provider.
 That means you would be sending the email through your gmail account.
You can send email /to/ any email user, including other gmail users.
