Too many people came to the Tomcat users list with problems that 
magically went away when an upstream Tomcat package was used instead of 
the vendor-provided one.
How good or bad in particular the Tomcat package from the Ubuntu 
repositories is, I can't say since I don't use it. But I don't see 
Tomcat 6 there and Tomcat 5.5 isn't on the current level - that contains 
important fixes IIRC - either. Don't know if those fixes are backported 
by Ubuntu's package maintainer, though.
