Well, I'm wrong again :(  It's not the same code under the covers. No wonder
some Gnomeoids have had better success using the KDE version.  So you can
try kde-guidance-powermanager - I don't believe it really has many KDE
dependencies.  It may work better for you - but it's definitely a YMMV
situation.
