Hi Alain.

I've just been playing with v5.3 and it has two major bugs you might
want to be aware of.

1.  once you've got your ubuntu system installed and updated, by default
you'll boot into a Ubuntu 2.6.24-19 kernel (the latest for Ubuntu unless
you have the Proposed repo enabled - then its 2.6.24-21) not the
required Untangle 2.6.24-16 one.  that's easily fixed with a quick edit
of the grub menu.lst file.

2.  you cannot access the library to install any addons from the local
console.  so far for me that has meant i got a working system up and
running, could connect through it, but couldn't add any toys to play
with.  seems it works if you connect via https from another machine on
the lan, so there is a workaround for that issue too.

i like the transparent bridge mode!  it deserves more attention.  i used
to have an openbsd based transparent bridge and i loved it - it was my
unhackable firewall which had no ip address.  lately i've moved from
smoothwall to endian but i've been wanting to check out untangle for a
while now.

btw i used ubuntu 8.04 server as my base install onto a RAID-1 setup,
updated, and ran the install script.  everything worked flawlessly until
i hit bug #2 above.  i'm installed on a p3-800 with 512mb RAM which
might explain some of my feelings on java.

so far i hate the java interface.  java is always heavy, this is no
exception.  the rack stuff is pretty but my first impression on the UI
is this is ZoneAlarm on steroids.  also "pretty" is not something i look
for in a firewall.  also some common stuff is pretty deep in the
interface - finding the manual reboot button for example.  also you have
to register your firewall before you can "buy" the software from their
online store - yes you still have to go through the store and "buy" the
open source stuff.

i have more playing to do but for now feels like i'm sticking with endian.
