That could indeed be the problem. I use passwords on my local net; I
only have 4-6 machines up at any one time and given that it's my net and
I control it I haven't setup to use with keys. I also use NX on the
machines, so passwords just seemed to be the logical way to go for me.

This is likely an samba issue. You might have a look at:

Make sure the samba settings on all machines are setup correctly,
afterwards I think you'll find it's OK. The Windows settings in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ComprehensiveSambaGuide
are key for the machines that I set up locally. Without them I was
having great difficulty connecting to any of them.
