What finally got it working for me was this setup (to confirm):

[ ] Use TLS if Available (unchecked)
[ ] Requite TLS (unchecked)
[/] Force old (port 5223) SSL (checked)
[ ] Allow plaintext (unchecked)

Connect Port: 443
Connect Server: talk.google.com
