I am a little confused here.  The file name completion is part of the
shell and has nothing to do with vim.  Did you mean:

sudo vim /etc/X11

In that case vim gives you a directory listing of the file argument, if
it is a directory.  Interesting feature.  I did not realize this feature
was a part of vim. The filename completion and the vim directory listing
are two separate systems, however. Both appear to be useful.

I have gotten so used to the filename completion feature of the shell,
it is second nature to me.  When I use cd, I find myself typing <tab> a
lot to let the shell complete the directory path, especially if it is
fairly deep and I do not remember the exact pathname.
