Well, by default, when you install Wicd, Network-Manager is uninstalled. 
And the install procedure is really simple: you add one line to your 
apt.lst (if i'm not wrong) and then you sudo apt-get update  and after 
that sudo apt-get install wicd ... As simple as that. Add 
/opt/wicd/tray.py to your startup (in System->Preferences->Sessions) and 
restart.

Then you're good to go.
