Can you explain how the all-in-1 adapter works? Can you explain how the

That doesn't look too good. You said it worked "before." Your previous 
version of Ubuntu might have detected the driver required by that device 
whereas Hardy seems to have trouble. Try to find out what kernel modules 
were used by your pendrive before you upgraded. Insert those modules 
using "modprobe" and test again.
