help needed for Ubuntu 8.04 on HP 6720s notebook

Yes, I am damn sure that these settings are working perfectly fine on
windows. Before changing my subnet mask to 255.255.0.0 on laptop booted with
ubuntu, I was browsing on my desktop booted with windows. I changed the
subnet mask on the laptop to the said one, unplugged the LAN cable from
desktop and plugged it into laptop and it started working. To my
satisfaction, I confirmed the settings on windows and that of ubuntu. I was
surprised to see this kind of behavior. But anyways, everything else is
working now. I could do build-essential, new software installation using
apt-get, run the update manager and get the updates installed etc.

I am not from networking background, so couldn't understand this. But I'll
have a look on the posts.
