You know, you just have to select the "single user" or "recovery" mode line
on the grub menu. That avoids steps 3-9:

That should certainly do it.
And MrCy: do you actually remember being prompted for a user name and
password when you installed Ubuntu? Are you sure you are using the same
_user_ name?
