Anyone else get their machine hosed after last update?

Anyone else have this this excitement today?

Just a normal update on a Hardy desktop (Dell machine)
ended up failing to boot.

This last update required a restart and I noticed it loaded new headers
for 2.6.24-19.  This kernel now fails to boot.

Trying to boot in recovery mode (with the most recent kernel on the
machine -- 2.6.24-19 -- hangs).

Seems like it's having a problem with the hard drives as it
hangs when it's saying something like:

ata1.00: qc timeout (cmd 0x27)
ata1.00: failed to read native max address (err_mask=0x4)
ata1.00: revalidation failed (errno=-5)
ata1: failed to recover some devices, retrying in 5 sec

It retries then fails and then says:

ata1.00: disabled

And then tries with ata2, an so on.



I can boot with 2.6.22-15-generic but I had to reconfigure xorg.conf
as the driver I have installed doesn't match this older kernel, I
assume.

NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 169.12, but
NVRM: this kernel module has the version 100.14.19.  Please
NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver
NVRM: components have the same version.


Anyone else have problems with this kernel?  Seems reasonably serious
if it's a problem with reading my SATA drives.
