Screen resolution T61p, Nvidia

I have 8.04 running on a Thinkpad T61p.

I'm using Nvidia's drivers and they seem to work well. However I cannot
make the screen resolution settings stick.

When I log in the screen seems to be scaled so that I have to move the
mouse the edge of the screen so that it scrolls.

The logical size seems to be the same as the physical size of the
screen, 1680x1050. But the logical pixels are larger than the real
ones. If I run

sudo displayconfig-gtk

I can fix it just by altering the refresh rate from 50Hz to 51Hz.

But this setting does not persist.

Can anyone give me a hint?

Kevin Whitefoot.
