Just curious, but what kind of problems connecting to the Google calendar?
And what other problems? I use Evolution myself but I never tried to connect
it to my Google calendar, maybe that would be a good idea if it worked
flawlessly?

For Mozilla Thunderbird there is an add-on program (open source
download) called "Lightning" which adds a calendar and a task manager to
the email client.
I have used it successfully with Thunderbird with both Linux and Windows
operating systems. This may meet the need indicated above - worth a
try anyway.
