And we quiet computing guys from your favorite Ubuntu Support channel are
advising against simply doing this.

Instead, do it like you want it:
-remove the mb
-Work out the plastic mess and extract that GPU cooler. Have the 
surfaces meticulously cleaned. Apply thermal heat thinly but 
thoroughly and then either reapply your cooler with springs and nuts 
and bolts or better, upgrade to the small coolers that have been 
recommended here.
-As you are working on it, remove the cpu fan and replace with a 
larger "oversize" unit that will surely blow some cooling air in the 
direction of the gpu cooler

And: your machine will not only be a lot cooler but way quieter, at 
the same time.
