Synaptic defunct

I have an interesting problem with updates or any action of synaptic.

After turning on today, I saw I had 3 updates, the synaptic will just
refresh its loading data when I hit install, it never prompts for my
password, I closed rebooted, same thing twice, I updated fine by
apt-get upgrade, rebooted still no synaptic work, I loaded it manually
then from system on panel, it starts to load by a brief task bar
button then it all exits, again, not asking for password.

Anyone have any suggestions to get synaptic to play nice?
