Nvidia, Ubuntu and Old CRT Monitor

I'm running on a Geforce 8800 GT, 512 MB RAM, with this monitor

It's VGA only :(, but it works fine. Your problem is because the
nvidia driver included with 7.10 doesn't support the 8800 GT.

The easiest way to deal with this is to upgrade to 8.04
