Debian packages most certainly ARE binary-compatible with Ubuntu.
Usually they will install and run just fine. I've installed lots of
them.

Perhaps you meant to say "Ubuntu is based on Debian, but is not the same
as Debian".

It IS true that you shouldn't use alien packages unless you know what
you are doing. You need to be able to deal with the problems that may
arise when packages not intended for Ubuntu are installed on Ubuntu.

I.e., the advice was good, the reason was wrong ;-)
