Setting up a file server

Hi

I am using ubuntu server for setting up a file server at home.
If I try to connect to the samba service on the server, I can see the dirs 
shared. When I try the same command from a remote PC, I get

# smbclient -NL 192.168.62.1
timeout connecting to 192.168.62.1:445

How can I open up that port?

Please don't send me proprietary file formats,
use ISO standard ODF instead (ISO/IEC 26300)
