Waiting may be all in vain, however. I did just install a Brother MFC-490CW but didn't have trouble accessing CUPS server, so can't help there. AFA installing the printer, I just followed the instructions Brother had on their site for Linux 64 bit printer setup at:
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/before.html
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/download_prn.html#MFC-490CW
(substitute your model no.)
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us_ot/en/faq/faq_top.html?reg=us&c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=mfc490cw_all(again your model no.)
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/faq_prn.html
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/download_scn.html
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/instruction_scn1a.html
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/instruction_scn3.html
http://solutions.brother.com/linux/en_us/instruction_scn1c.html#9
If non of the above help to get you started then this should do the trick as Brother has the greatest Linux support ever and replies promptly:
https://secure6.brother.co.jp/LinuxContactUs/contact/Linuxform.html
Just tell them exactly what the problem your having is and I'll bet they will reply with just what you need to do.
Hope this helps. I followed the pre-install procedure then loaded the driver(s) and everything just worked. My biggest concern was deciding just what pre-installs I needed to do for my model and ended up doing them all for Ubuntu(didn't hurt) and is also what I wrote Brother about.
